How much does it cost to resurface a pool?
A national average of about $11,000, with most jobs between $6,000 and $15,000. The published range runs from about $1,500 for a small vinyl liner replacement to about $50,000 for a large pool in a premium finish. The two things that move the number are the pool shell and the interior finish you choose.
Which pool finish lasts the longest?
Pebble, at a published 15 to 20 years or more. Quartz plaster lasts 10 to 15 years, standard plaster 7 to 12, and paint 5 to 7. Those differences are large enough that comparing finishes on upfront price alone gives you close to the wrong answer.
Is pebble worth the extra cost over plaster?
On a per-year basis it is usually cheaper, not more expensive. Plaster at $6 to $8 per square foot over 7 to 12 years works out at $0.50 to $1.14 per square foot per year. Pebble at $7 to $15 over 15 to 20 years works out at $0.35 to $1.00. The main reason to prefer plaster is texture: pebble is noticeably rougher underfoot.

How do I know if my pool needs resurfacing or just a repair?
The test is whether the surrounding surface is sound, not how big the damage is. Localised damage in an otherwise smooth, firmly bonded surface is a repair. A surface that is rough or abrasive across large areas, sounds hollow when tapped, or is showing substrate through the finish has failed generally, and patching it will chase the problem around the pool.
How long does resurfacing take?
Typically several days to a couple of weeks depending on the finish, the amount of repair work found once the old surface is off, and the weather. The two stages that most often extend the timeline are the inspection after removal, where hidden damage appears, and the cure period, which does not tolerate rain or temperature extremes.
Why did my quote change after work started?
Because nobody can see the shell until the old surface is removed. Cracks, delamination and rebar corrosion are all discovered at that point and all add cost. A well written quote states a rate for that remedial work up front rather than staying silent about it. If yours did not, that is worth raising before the work continues.
Are pool resurfacing contractors licensed?
In many states, yes. California issues a specific C-53 Swimming Pool contractor classification through the Contractors State License Board, with publicly searchable licence status, and other states have their own arrangements. Requirements vary, so check your own state board. The Pool and Hot Tub Alliance also runs a public directory of roughly 4,000 member companies, though membership confirms a business trades rather than certifying its work.

Does the start-up after refilling really matter?
Yes, more than most people expect. The new finish cures underwater over the days after refilling, and the water chemistry and brushing during that window materially affect how long the surface lasts. Confirm in writing who is responsible for the start-up, how many days are included, and whether the warranty depends on it being done a particular way.
