Pool resurfacing vs. a full renovation

Resurfacing is one item in a renovation, not a competing option. What decides whether the surface alone covers it, and how much longer a fuller project runs.

"Resurfacing" and "renovation" get used loosely, including by contractors, but they describe different amounts of work. Resurfacing means replacing the interior finish and nothing else. A renovation is the larger container: it can include resurfacing plus other work done on the same pool while it is already drained.

If you are still deciding whether the surface itself needs a full resurface or just a spot repair, see Plaster repair or full resurface first. This page assumes that question is settled and asks the next one: once the surface needs redoing, is resurfacing alone enough, or does it make sense to add more to the same job?

What a renovation can include beyond the surface

Angi's own comparison of pool removal and pool remodeling sets out what falls under "remodeling": "Pool remodeling involves updating your current pool to improve its appearance, functionality, or safety. This can include resurfacing, updating or repairing tiles, adding modern features, and improving energy efficiency." Resurfacing sits inside that definition as one option among several, not as an alternative to it.

The same source is direct about what happens once you add scope: "if you opt for extensive pool renovations, the costs will be higher and the project can take several weeks." More components added to the job means more cost and more time, on top of whatever resurfacing alone would have cost.

How one national renovation company groups the work

For a sense of what "more" typically means in practice, Blue Haven Pools, a national pool remodeling company, lists six categories under its renovation and remodeling service: tile and coping, deck renovation, pool resurfacing, full pool redesign, equipment upgrades, and water features and enhancements. Resurfacing is one of the six, not the whole job.

Blue Haven draws its own line between the two terms: "A renovation focuses on restoring your existing pool by replacing worn finishes, tile, coping, or equipment. A remodel goes a step further by changing the pool’s appearance, functionality, or layout with features such as a spa, tanning ledge, water features, new decking, or lighting." On that definition, adding tile, coping or equipment work to a resurfacing job is still a renovation; changing the pool's shape or adding features moves it into remodel territory.

Cost: what's published, and what isn't

Resurfacing alone has a published national figure: a national average around $11,000 for a pool measuring 1,000 square feet, with an average range of $6,000 to $15,000. See pool resurfacing cost for the full breakdown by pool shell and by finish.

There is no equivalent published national figure for a full renovation, because a renovation is not one fixed scope: it is resurfacing plus whichever of tile, coping, decking or equipment work you choose to add, and each of those add-ons carries its own cost that this site does not have a verified national figure for yet. The Angi comparison above is already direct on the effect of adding scope: opting for more extensive renovations costs more and takes longer. Get a written, itemized quote that breaks out resurfacing from any other scope, rather than accepting a single lump-sum number for "renovation."

Timeline: resurfacing alone vs. a fuller renovation

Resurfacing on its own runs short: "a typical resurfacing project takes just five to seven days to complete," per Angi's own resurfacing guide.

Add other scope and the range widens. Blue Haven's own FAQ states: "Most pool remodeling projects are completed within a few weeks to a few months, depending on the scope of work."

Anthony & Sylvan Pools, whose own about page states "Our specialized renovation teams service the Northeast, Georgia and Texas," states the same kind of scope-dependent range for its own projects: "The duration of a pool-renovation project depends on the scope of work. On average, projects take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks." Both companies tie their own average to how much work is in scope rather than giving one fixed number, which matches the resurfacing-alone figure above being the short end of a range that stretches out as more gets added.

Either way, expect the pool to be unusable for the duration. Anthony & Sylvan's own FAQ is direct on this point: "Pool renovations require temporary pool closure for your safety and the safety of our team." Resurfacing alone closes the pool for the same reason, just for less time.

Which fits whom

  • Resurfacing alone fits when the finish is the only thing wrong.
  • A fuller renovation fits when tile, coping, decking or equipment are also aging or already due for replacement. Bundling that work into the same drained-pool job avoids paying to drain and refill the pool twice for problems you already know about.
  • A fuller renovation does not fit as a way to guess at problems you have not diagnosed yet. Get each additional scope item quoted and itemized separately.

For how to tell whether the surface itself has reached the point of needing a full resurface, see Plaster repair or full resurface. For what that job runs, see pool resurfacing cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is resurfacing a type of renovation, or something separate?

Per Angi's own comparison of pool removal and remodeling, resurfacing is one of the things a renovation can include, alongside tile repair, added features and efficiency upgrades. It is not a separate, competing project.

How much longer does a full renovation take than resurfacing alone?

Resurfacing alone is typically five to seven days, per Angi's own resurfacing guide. Once other scope is added, each company gives its own separate range: Blue Haven's FAQ says most remodeling projects run a few weeks to a few months, depending on the scope of work, while Anthony & Sylvan's FAQ says its renovation projects average a few days to a few weeks, also depending on scope.

Can I get one quote that covers resurfacing and everything else at once?

You can, but ask for it itemized by scope item. A single lump-sum "renovation" number makes it hard to tell what resurfacing itself costs versus what tile, coping, decking or equipment work is adding on top of it.
